News in brief

A dominant Thailand defeated PNG by 121 runs at Port Moresby and thus lead the series 1-0. Sent in to bat by Brenda Tau, Thailand racked up 236/8 from their 50 overs, courtesy of half centuries to Naruemol Chaiwai (82) and Nannapat Koncharoenkai (54). It looked like the total would be more but PNG managed to pull things back in the last 5 overs.
The PNG chase was stymied by that ol’ Thailand tight bowling and fielding and never really got going. Tanya Ruma (29) was the only batter to really fire, but was a rear guard action after the team had slumped to 39/4 in the 15th over. Onnicha Kamchomphu (3-15) was the chief wrecker, but well supported by Sunida Chaturongrattana (3-20) and Thipatcha Putthawong (2-15). The second match of the series is tomorrow (15th).
Cricket Australia has thrown their support behind Australia’s vice-captain Ash Gardner, following a much publicised personal matter, but have chosen to update their Respect at Work policy to ensure their are no conflicts of interest when it comes to selection.
The Women’s Asia Cup is likely to be played in the UAE between August 28 and September 13. The competing teams will be: Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Malaysia, Thailand and UAE.
