Sophie Devine

Born on 1st September 1989 in Porirua, Wellington, New Zealand ODI and T20 captain, Sophie Devine. White Ferns and Black Sticks, a dual international, Sophie has represented New Zealand both in cricket and hockey.

Playing senior hockey and cricket by the age of 14, it was only a matter of time before she represented her country in either sport.

At age 17 Sophie made her debut for New Zealand in an ODI against Australia in Brisbane. Batting at number eleven (!!) she scored 6 not out. Opening the bowling she removed Melissa Bulow for a duck and ended with 1-34 from 7.5 overs. It was quite a modest debut for the youngster, playing just three of the five matches in the series. Before she turns 18, she’s played in three different ODI series and eleven matches.

Her T20I debut in 2006 against Australia didn’t start too well, run out without facing a ball. In 2015 she broke the record for the fastest T20 half century (man or woman) in 18 balls, a record she still holds for the women’s game. In 2020, Sophie became the first player to score six consecutive half centuries in T20 Internationals.

As well as Wellington and Canterbury in New Zealand, Sophie has played for South Australia, Western Australia, Warwickshire and Yorkshire, Adelaide Strikers and Perth Scorchers in the WBBL.
