Essie Shevill was one of three sisters who played in the first women’s Test series in 1934/5. Essie played in all three Tests, while Fern (Blade) played the first and Rene played the 2nd and third. (Fern and Rene were twins but never played in the same Test.)
Essie’s claim to fame – a duck in the first innings of the first Test when Australia were rolled for 47 runs, but in the second innings she scored 63 and thus the first Australian to score a half century. In the second Test, Australia needing to show more grit, Essie batted for 47 minutes to score a duck. The innings drew praise from the England captain.
