Born on 26th December 1959 in Kew, Victoria, is former Test and ODI wicket keeper for Australia, Chris Matthews.
Chris made her debut for Victoria in 1983/84 and a matter of weeks later she was selected in the Australian squad to tour India under the leadership of Jill Kennare. Australia had last played a Test in 1978/79 so there was no incumbent. Those early performances for Victoria put her ahead of the others and she was on the plane to India and a fixture of the Australian Test and ODI teams for a decade.
Matthews’ debut for Australia was an ODI on the 19th January 1984. Two days later she made her Test debut. Quite a few other players on that tour made their debut in both formats so it was a young side under a new captain in Kennare.
The Tests were all draws, but the Australians won the ODI series 4-0. It was a ground-breaking series in many ways and set Matthews off on a solid footing. No time to rest back home: a five Test Ashes series in 1984/5, that nail biter where Australia won 2-1.
Chris played in a number of iconic series and ended her career having played 20 Test matches. She took 46 catches and 12 stumpings. She played in 47 ODIs which included the 1988/9 and 1993 World Cups, taking 35 catches and 14 stumpings.
Chris has been CEO of the WACA since 2011, keeping her interest in the game alive well after hanging up the gloves.
