Can Sri Lanka’s captain, Chamari Athapaththu, and her army of quality slow bowlers make the finals of a World Cup for the first time?

We have to go back to 2018 for the most recent edition of the Asia Cup, stalled and postponed by the global pandemic.

So often the fortunes of the Sri Lanka team rise and fall depending on the performance of their skipper and this tournament was no different.

Sri Lanka have had a busy programme of ODIs and T20 Internationals over June/July in preparation for the Commonwealth Games.

A sixth ODI century for Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu led them to victory in the final ODI at Karachi but Pakistan won the series.

Pakistan has comprehensively defeated Sri Lanka 3-0 in the T20 International series played at Southend Club Cricket Stadium in Karachi.

It’s been sixteen years since Sri Lanka has visited Pakistan, and in very hot conditions we have a six match series to watch.

We look at the five teams participating in the Commonwealth Games Qualifier in Kuala Lumpur for the one remaining spot.

Nine teams will compete for three vacant spots in the 2022 World Cup in March and a further two positions in the ICC World Championships.
