World Cup Final 2013
On February 17th 2013, West Indies and Australia were the two teams to play in the World Cup final at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai.
The two teams had met six days prior where the West Indies defeated Australia in the Super Sixes on the back of a Deandra Dottin special.
Australian skipper Jodie Fields won the toss over the West Indies’ Merissa Aguilleira and elected to bat. The innings started well and continued right the way through. Jess Cameron (75) and Rachael Haynes (52) were the top scorers, while Fields (36*) and the youngster Ellyse Perry (25*) finished off the innings to give Australia 7/259 after their 50 overs.
The West Indies began steadily, but when Perry trapped Kycia Knight in front when the score was 32, a mini collapse ensued. Perry removed Stafanie Taylor and Natasha Nixon in quick succession to have the Windies 3/41. But worse than the wickets was the strangulation by the bowlers and fielding unit.
Aguilleira battled bravely and indeed top scored, but her 23 was nowhere near enough. West Indies were bowled out for 145. Perry’s 3-19 from her 10 overs, and Lisa Sthalekar’s 2-20 display just how miserable the Australians were in terms of giving runs away.
Jess Cameron was announced as Player of the Match as Australia won the final by 114 runs. It was their sixth World Cup victory.
Scores:
Australia 259/7 (Jess Cameron 75, Rachael Haynes 52, Jodie Fields 36*, Shaquana Quintyne 3-27) 50 overs
West Indies 145 (Merissa Aguilleira 23, Ellyse Perry 3-19, Lisa Sthalekar 2-20, Erin Osborne 2-26) 43.1 overs
