Brazil Keeps the Dream Alive

Brazil won the South American derby today in a rain effected match and keep their hopes alive of winning the tournament.

Veronica Vasquez won the toss for Argentina, returning to the position after having stepped aside in the two previous matches for Alison Stocks. Vasquez chose to field first, perhaps with the nightmare of batting first against Brazil earlier in the week and being bundled out for 12 still in her mind.

Brazil struggled to move the scoring along. It had been the same pattern for them during the week on this pitch. Both teams unaccustomed to batting on turf and this wicket not the easiest. Combine that with a slow outfield and runs don’t come easy. They were aided by another pattern seen during the week, the extras given by the Argentinian bowlers. In all 22 wides and 2 no-balls helped Brazil reach a score of 79/7 with Renata de Sousa top score with the bat of 14. Best bowling figures were Constanza Sosa (2-13) and Tamara Basile (1-9).

Despite losing an early wicket, a runout to the slick Brazil fielders, Argentina through the captain Vasquez (16*), might well have gone close to the target but rain wiped out any hope of a natural result and the match was decided by the Duckworth Lewis system, a victory for Brazil by 14 runs.

It’s doubtful that Argentina would have made the remaining 38 runs needed in the remaining 5 overs but you never know. What we do know is that victory here has kept Brazil within touch of winning the tournament.
