Pramila Bhatt

Born on 16th September 1969 in Bangalore, Karnataka, is former India Test and ODI captain, Pramila Bhatt.

It was a fast rise to the top following a debut for the allrounder for Karnataka in season 1990/1. She played one match in December of 1990 and by January 26th she is playing her debut Test against Australia at North Sydney Oval. In that Test, under the captaincy of Shubhangi Kulkarni, India came upon a strong Aussie team bolstered by another debutant: Belinda Clark, meaning both Pramila and Clark played their debut in the same Test match.

The first of her 22 ODI appearances came at the 1993 World Cup in England. She would go on to lead India at the next World Cup, at home in India.

In 1994/5 she travelled to New Zealand for a one off Test where she made her highest score in Tests, 42. In season 1995/96 England toured India for a gripping three Test series. The third of these Pramila was awarded the captaincy, becoming the seventh Test captain of India and the scene of her best bowling figures of 3-42. It also happened to be one of the most exciting Tests ever between India and England, with the visitors escaping a loss in the final session.

There is one more job to do, captaining India at home for the 1997 World Cup. Pramila seemed to enjoy close matches, one of those a tie against New Zealand, and in the semi final against Australia, India went down by just 19 runs. It was Pramila’s final ODI outing for India having guided her team to the best finish to date for a World Cup.
