Mary Spear

Born on 11th September 1913 in Somerset, former Test player for England, Mary Frances Spear.

Mary was in the England touring party of 1934/35 to Australia and New Zealand. A right-arm medium pace bowler she played in each of the first four Test matches ever played, three against Australia and one against New Zealand.

Often bowling first or second change, Mary took the third ever five wicket haul in Test cricket. Myrtle Maclagan (7-10) and Australia’s Ann Palmer (7-18) in the first innings of both teams in the first Test, then Mary in Australia’s second innings with 5-15.

In her four Test matches, Mary had little to do with bat in hand, but took 14 wickets at the ridiculous average of just 5.78 runs per wicket. Her economy rate a mere 0.69 runs per over. She passed away in 2006.
