Born on August 31st, 1951 in Gravesend, Kent, is former Test and ODI player for England Megan Amy Lear and one of the first to play at Lord’s.
A right-hand batter, Megan made her ODI debut in the inaugural Women’s World Cup in 1973, but not for England, she played for Young England. In her debut match she top scored before being bowled by Tina McPherson for 9. Young England terrorised by the Aussie quicks, all out for 58. It was a tough initiation, but many of that team along with Megan went on to bigger and better things for the senior England team.
Megan’s debut for England was against the Australians in the second Test in 1976 scoring 18 runs and taking two catches. It was the first of nine Test matches in all, 286 runs at 19.06 with a top score of 39.
At the end of that Test series in 1976 there was an ODI series of three matches, the second of which was played at Lord’s Cricket Ground and the first time women had been allowed to play there. Megan was one of the first women to walk out to play on that famous ground on August 4th 1976.
Megan would play ODIs (England, Young England) scoring 451 runs at 28.18 with a top score of 58, one of three half centuries. An international career that spanned from 1976 to 1985 the real highlights surely being part of the first ever World Cup of cricket and the first women’s team to play at Lord’s.
