The tournament returned to Asia for the first time since 1997 when India hosted the ODI World Cup in 2013, their third time as hosts. Australia defeated West Indies in the final to record their sixth World Cup title.
Teams
Eight teams participated in the tournament:
New Zealand, Australia, England, India, South Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies
Format
The eight teams were divided into two pools of four. The top three teams in each pool would go on to play in the Super Sixes, each team playing the three teams from the other pool. The top two teams would then meet in the final.
Ladders:
Pool A
While the West Indies thrashed Sril Lanka (368/8 v 159) they lost their other matches against India and England quite heavily and only just scraped through to the Super Sixes on net run rate over India.
Team | P | W | L | T | NR | NRR | Points |
England | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 0 | +0.641 | 4 |
Sri Lanka | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 0 | –0.433 | 4 |

India | 3 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 0 | –0.433 | 2 |
Pool B
This pool was a little more straight forward with Australia winning all three fixtures and Pakistan losing all three. New Zealand predictably second with South Africa the third team to make the Super Sixes after their defeat of Pakistan.

Australia | 3 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 0 | +1.099 | 6 |

Pakistan | 3 | 0 | 3 | 0 | 0 | –1.986 | 0 |
Super Sixes
Each team brought the two results from their matches against their fellow pool teams and then played each of the teams from the other pool.
