Born on July 28th 1979 in Wennappuwa, is former Test, ODI and T20I player for Sri Lanka, Warnakolasooriya Rose Priyanka Fernando.
A right-hand batter and right-arm off-break bowler, Rose made her international debut in an ODI match against Netherlands at Asgiriya Stadium, Kandy in November 1997. A month later her second ODI was against the same opposition, in the World Cup. She took one wicket, that of the Netherlands captain, Pauline te Beest.
In 1997/98 Sri Lanka hosted Pakistan for a Test match, the only one ever played by the host nation. They made a good fist of it. Rasanjali Silva won the toss for the home team and chose to bat, then declaring at 305/9 in 96.1 overs, a cracking rate for Women’s Test matches at the time. Batting at number nine, Rose Fernando was second top score with 44.
Set over 400 to win the match, Pakistan folded for just 100 runs, with Rose picking up 3-28 in the process, including the Khan sisters, Shaiza and Sharmeen.
Rose continued to play for Sri Lanka in the ODI format for another decade. She appeared in another World Cup, in Australia in 2008/09. In 37 ODIs, Rose collected 43 wickets at just 14.41 runs per wicket and an economy of 2.28.
As her career reached the end, T20 Internationals came into play and Rose played in just three during the World Cup of 2009.
