Born in Christchurch on 20th June 1970, Maia Lewis is a former New Zealand Test, ODI and T20 player and the ninth Test captain.
Maia represented New Zealand in 9 Tests, 78 ODIs and 1 T20I. She led New Zealand in two Tests, becoming the ninth Test skipper for her country. In 1997 Maia led her White Ferns to the final of the ODI World Cup in India.
Maia’s Test debut came in 1992, against the visiting England team. By 2003/4 she is the Test skipper and leads New Zealand on a tour to India and then England. Those were the last Test matches Maia or any other player for New Zealand participated in. On the same tour to England, Maia led the team on the field for New Zealand’s first T20 international. In a career spanning 15 years, Maia Lewis led the White Ferns with distinction.
