Nell Massey

Born on February 21st 1938 in Mount Barker Western Australia, former Test wicket keeper for Australia, Nell Massey.

Although born in the West, Nell’s family moved to Victoria where she and sister Eileen played all of their cricket for the Collingwood club and for the state.

Nell’s Test career was played entirely during the 1957/8 tour of Australia by England. The first Test at North Sydney was washed out and the second Test, Nell’s debut was the Test they call, “the Betty Wilson Test” where her fellow Victorian took 11 wickets including a hat trick and scored a century.

Nell opened the batting and was out for just 4 runs as England’s Mary Duggan destroyed the Aussies for just 38. In the England innings, the first wicket was Cecilia Robinson, caught Nell Massey, bowled Eileen Massey 1. Nell also took two stumpings off the bowling of Betty Wilson.

Nell opened the batting in all three Tests that were played that summer but took the last to make any impact with the bat, when she scored 36 and 40 not out.

It’s with the gloves that we judge a keeper and across her three Test career Nell took 3 catches and 6 stumpings giving her 9 dismissals in total.
